UN Packaging and Food-Contact Suitability: Two Different Reviews

This article was originally published in January 2024. It has been corrected to distinguish dangerous-goods transport packaging from food-contact suitability. A UN packaging mark is not a food-contact approval; the intended food, contact conditions and destination requirements need their own review.

What UN Packaging Testing Addresses

UN transport-packaging discussions concern dangerous goods and the relevant package design. ISO 16495 describes design-type testing information for packaging, IBCs and large packaging used to transport dangerous goods. This does not establish that a container is suitable for contact with food.

Food-Contact Requirements Need Separate Evidence

Food-contact assessment considers the actual food and conditions of use. For example, the US FDA distinguishes food types and filling or storage conditions; the EU framework addresses food-contact materials and supporting compliance documentation. These examples explain the distinction and are not a statement of Malaysian requirements.

Match the Documentation to the Proposed Pack

Ask Polytainer to identify the proposed container, closure, liner, seal and fittings, and the documents available for that configuration. If dangerous-goods transport approval and food-contact suitability are both relevant, review each requirement separately with the responsible team.

Discuss Hygiene and Contamination Controls

Explain the food, filling process, storage period and handling arrangements. Ask what quality and hygiene controls apply and what supporting records are available. Packaging selection alone cannot guarantee contamination-free food or replace the user's own controls.

Customized Solutions for Diverse Food Products

Food packaging is not one-size-fits-all. Describe the food, fill temperature, contact time and dispensing method before discussing standard or customised options. Confirm that the proposed materials and components are assessed for the intended use.

Compliance with Regulatory Authorities

Have the quality or regulatory team identify the current requirements for Malaysia and any export destination. Review the supplier's documents against those requirements and record unresolved questions before approving the pack. This article is a starting point for that conversation, not an approval for a particular shipment or food application.

Sustainable Food Packaging Practices

Consider product protection and the route after use when reviewing an environmental proposal. A change in material or reuse arrangement still needs to meet the food-contact requirements for the intended application. Request evidence before claiming a reduced environmental impact.

Continuous Innovation in Food Safety Packaging

When a material, design or component changes, reopen the relevant document and trial review. Keep the approved specification and change history together so purchasing, production and quality teams are working from the same information.

For a food-packaging enquiry, bring the food description, contact conditions, destination markets and proposed pack configuration to the discussion. Keep any dangerous-goods transport requirements separate from the food-contact review.
